Descending Crows #3 - Original Collagraph

I was commissioned to create this collagraph for a client several years ago. The version I did at that time had a gradated orange to yellow background.  I had a couple of black and white versions sitting around and decided to see what would happen if I worked with cooler colors.  I think there are about 8 different layers of color and texture on this background.  It just took a long time to get it to a place that seemed to work.

Black-capped Chickadee on Orange #1 (original collagraph of bird)

If you are interested in more background information on this piece please read the information provided with the black and white version in the preceding post. Since I created a new plate for the black and white version I couldn't stop there.  I started with a yellow background and then created another plate to print an orange texture on top of the yellow. I found the orange to be a bit much so I created another plate and printed a yellow texture on top of the orange.

Black-capped Chickadee #2 (original black and white bird collagraph)

A number of years ago I created two color versions of a chickadee. The original background was blue and later I experimented with a green background. Recently one of my clients requested a black and white version. As a result I decided to create a new plate using some old and new textures in the hopes that the black and white version would stand on its own.

"Are You Feeling Gullible Today?"  I decided to shorten the title a bit.

Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker #1 - Collagraph of Small Male Woodpecker

A new addition to my bird series with attitude.  I haven't seen any of these small woodpeckers here in St. Louis, but it appears that it is possible. Apparently the red throat is the tell-tale sign that this is a male. As with my most recent Cardinal piece I printed four- to five-textured layers of color on the background.

Red-Breasted Nuthatch #2 (Collagraph of Female Bird)

One of my customers commissioned me to do a collagraph of this funny little bird.  I think I have only seen white-breasted nuthatches here in Missouri and had figured that one day I would do a collagraph of one of those guys hanging upside down on a tree (which still may happen).  But for now here's my version of the red-breasted female.

Dive Bomber #1 (Collagraph of Northern Mockingbird)

When I was in high school a Northern Mockingbird would dive bomb me while I was mowing the grass.  He or she would come so close to my head I thought I needed to do something to protect myself.  My solution was to wear a large sombrero.  I'm sure anyone passing by found me to be rather entertaining.

Wild Turkey Hen #2 (Hand Colored Collagraph of Textured Bird)

I thought I would show you what a mess I can make while in the process of creating my collagraphs. Pieces of textured paper, etc. just about everywhere (including the floor).
This collagraph practically made me blind with all the tiny pieces. I am currently working on a version with a colored background. I am trying to come up with a more luminous backdrop which is not proving to be easy.

The Stalker (Collagraph of Great Blue Heron)

I am working on a series of larger birds that are the same size. So if you look below a couple of posts you will see the stork that I came up with. I think he has a little more character than this one. Anyway I learned one way to distinguish a Great Blue Heron from a Grey Heron is the rusty color found at the top of their legs and in the neck. Plus the Great Blue Heron is much more common in North America. Exciting info right? I think I prefer the black and white version. I did a monotype of this hummingbird several years ago and have always wanted to do a version as a collagraph. Back then I wasn't sure how to make it work. Because of all my other bird prints I managed to come up with this.
