Ripley #1 - Original Collagraph of German Sheped Mix

I had so much fun creating this collagraph. His name
is Ripley and I finally finished this commission late last year.
Ripley is included in a show of my collagraphs that are
hanging at the Farm Table in O'Fallon through February 17.

Cheeto #1 - Original Collagraph - Pit Bull Mix

Recently I was asked to create a portrait of a stray rescue animal for the upcoming Urban Wanderers art show & auction.  I asked if it would be okay to do a portrait of Cheeto, a stray rescue dog who was adopted by some good friends of mine a couple of years ago. I did several variations of this character, but this version seems to be the favorite.

Blue Rockfish #2 - Mixed Media

After looking at several of the fish that I posted quite some time ago I decided I needed to take them farther.  I added more color & texture to the piece on the bottom. I thought the background needed more attention.  If you click on the fish you will get a larger view and will hopefully see some of the layers I have added. Originally colored tissue paper was glued to the paper prior to printing the plate composed of various textures to define the fish and the border (black ink).  Once that was established I printed multiple layers of texture on the border and most recently I printed several layers of color on the entire background.  More modified fish to come.

Descending Crows #3 - Original Collagraph

I was commissioned to create this collagraph for a client several years ago. The version I did at that time had a gradated orange to yellow background.  I had a couple of black and white versions sitting around and decided to see what would happen if I worked with cooler colors.  I think there are about 8 different layers of color and texture on this background.  It just took a long time to get it to a place that seemed to work.

Black-capped Chickadee on Orange #1 (original collagraph of bird)

If you are interested in more background information on this piece please read the information provided with the black and white version in the preceding post. Since I created a new plate for the black and white version I couldn't stop there.  I started with a yellow background and then created another plate to print an orange texture on top of the yellow. I found the orange to be a bit much so I created another plate and printed a yellow texture on top of the orange.

Black-capped Chickadee #2 (original black and white bird collagraph)

A number of years ago I created two color versions of a chickadee. The original background was blue and later I experimented with a green background. Recently one of my clients requested a black and white version. As a result I decided to create a new plate using some old and new textures in the hopes that the black and white version would stand on its own.

Tupie #2 - Welsh Corgie - Collagraph

This is the final dog collagraph in this grouping. My good friend Diane has had Tupie for many years now. She adopted her after Tupie was done with her days competing in shows. Quite some time ago Diane sent me some really great photos of this critter so when I started working on this project I knew this would be one of my challenges. As in the most recent dog portraits I created a lot of plates and printed many layers of color and texture to get to this point.  Who knows, this may change again, but this is where I will leave it for now.

Ben #3 - Mixed Media

This is the second of three dog pieces I have been working on.  This happens to be the third of three versions of this piece. In the first print of this series I started by gluing tissue paper to lay out some of the areas of color and then I created a separate plate to print the dog and some of the other textures. In this case I did not start with tissue paper, but printed color on the dog and background first. The next step was to print the textured B&W plate. Following this step I started layering texture and color in the border. I created a fourth plate to print additional texture on the dog.  The final step was to add tissue paper which defined the fabric. This keeps changing so it could change again.  The blue seems a little too bold.  I am tired of looking at it so here it is for now.  I need to move on for a while.

Welcome to the Farm #10 - Mixed Media

This is the first of three dog pieces I have been working on.  I started by gluing tissue paper to lay out some of the color areas and then used an existing plate to print the dog and some of the other textures. Finally I added the border by printing multiple layers of color.
The original piece, a black and white collagraph, was inspired by a photo my sister took of a black lab named Dusk. He reminds me of my Peschi.

As mentioned yesterday here are two more fish that I have been experimenting with.  Colored tissue paper was glued to the paper prior to printing the textured plate (black ink).  I printed multiple layers of color on the border of each print and was pleasantly surprised with the border color in the second version.

Widget #1 - Original Collagraph of Sleeping Cat

I guess I have been preoccupied with other things these days.  This is a portrait of my sister's cat started 6 months ago and finally completed about a month ago. I shot the photo last year during my annual visit to the east coast. I loved the pose and all those crazy polka dots.
I managed to ship a Widget collagraph to the Rappahannock Art League in order for it to be included in their 2016 Labor Day Show. Ironically the piece won a blue ribbon and a cash prize. Pleasant surprise.

Nocturnal Visitor #1 - Original Collagraph of Raccoon

I've seen a few raccoons around over the years. Last year I managed to witness a mother moving four of her kits or cubs (not clear which word is correct).  Very sweet.
