The lookdown is a game fish which is usually silvery on both sides. (I have obviously taken some liberty here in my color choices).   In the western Atlantic, the lookdown is found from Canada and Maine south to Uruguay, which includes Bermuda and the Gulf of Mexico.  They usually live in shallow water near the coast, along hard or sandy bottoms.  Below is the black and white before I added color

I have been doing some smaller black and white collagraphs of fish and thought I would do a couple of larger pieces in color.  The image below is the b&w before I added color.

 

Chickadee #1 (Hand-Pulled Collagraph of Bird on Blue)

When I was growing up my parents set their bird feeder up so that it was attached to the house and could be reached from the dining room window. I remember opening the window and sticking my hand out the window and sitting very still and having the chickadees come to feed. Recently I thought I would try to create a collagraph of one of these guys since I see them daily at my bird feeder. Initially I intended it to be black and white, but decided to carry it further. Somehow the black and white didn't quite work. I have included a photo of the black and white stage prior to adding color (below).

Chickadee (black and white collagraph)

I was originally going to leave this as a black and white, but I decided it just wasn't there so I decided to carry it further and add color which you will see in the next post.

Kinglet #2 (Hand-Pulled Collagraph of Carolina Wren)

The wren is also known as "kinglet" in Old High German, a name associated with a legend of an election of the "king of birds". The bird who could fly to the highest altitude would be made king. The eagle out flew all other birds, but he was beaten by a small bird who had hidden in his plumage.
