We used to have a pair of grosbeaks that came through every Spring. Unfortunately we haven't seen them in a couple of years. This is the latest addition to my bird collagraphs. I will probably do a version with a colored background in the near future so check back soon.

On Edge (Collagraph of Brown Pelican)

I came up with this guy in response to a print exchange request. The guidelines are to print a limited edition of 14 prints on 5" x 7" paper. The intent is for us to use up scraps of paper . . . which I have an abundance of. One print will be in a traveling show, another will be sold (hopefully) and the remaining 12 will be distributed to other printmakers participating in the exchange. The show of prints will be traveling to New Zealand in March. I will probably work on a color version of this to come some time in the future. Young Blood Gallery and Boutique

I was invited to participate in this printmaking show of Southern Printmakers. St. Louis doesn't exactly qualify, but they still wanted to include me. I originally created this collagraph in 2000. I designed it with my father in mind whom is always coming up with clever puns. I recently pulled a couple of these out of one of my piles and decided to try and update it a bit. I lightened the background and reprinted the texture and color on the green part of the body. I included a close up so that one could get a better idea of what the texture looks like on the background. The background in Wise Guys #3 is a little softer than the background in Wise Guys #5. The image size is 28" x 15.5" and the paper size is 31" x 18.5".

I am working on a series of larger birds that are the same size. So if you look below a couple of posts you will see the stork that I came up with. I think he has a little more character than this one. Anyway I learned one way to distinguish a Great Blue Heron from a Grey Heron is the rusty color found at the top of their legs and in the neck. Plus the Great Blue Heron is much more common in North America. Exciting info right? I think I prefer the black and white version. This is another version of the stork which has a brighter background. I personally like the more subtle background in my previous post. I took a different approach here where I started out printing some color on the bird, then printed the black plate and then printed the background color. I have been working on this guy off and on for quite a while. I spent a lot of time creating the feathers, but I think it was worth the effort. The second stage was to print color on the background and the third stage was to hand color the bird.

I recently participated in the Open Studio Event presented by the Contemporary Art Museum. One of the people I met asked if I had ever done a pug. My friend Diane gave me a photo of her first corgi, Lana Lee, and was curious to see what I could do with it. Well here's what I have come up with at this point. As you can see I started out printing some color and then inked up my textured plate with a burnt umber. The final step was to do a bit of hand coloring. I was thinking about adding color to the background, but I really like it the way it is. Anyway I may try printing this in just black and white, but for the time being I will think about it.

Above you can see some of the stages that this piece went through. This was another one of those what was I thinking???? I obviously still have an obsession with pattern. At any rate, the image size of the peacock is 28" x 21". Paper size is 31" x 24". I recently framed this piece for a show and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it looked. This piece is printed on arches cover white paper. When I have the energy I may do another color variation. I think for now I may go back to painting for a while . . .

This is the second stage of the printing process. I decided to try something new this time. I printed some of the color first and then printed the black textures on top. I think this lends itself well for this subject matter. Don't know that I would like it with my still life work. I have been experimenting with other ways of doing this so I will post those in the coming days.

Dragonfly

I came across this dragonfly in my backyard a few weeks ago. When I saw him I ran back into the house to get my camera. To my delight he was still there when I returned. I shot several shots, but think this was the best one. I then decided to do a collagraph based on this guy and you can see below what transpired.

The image size of this collagraph measures 12.5" x 19". This guy caused me some problems. I originally wanted this to be a black and white image. I liked the texture on the background but

knew it would cause me problems and it did. It was just too much so I tried to tone the background back a bit which you can see below. I was still not happy and decided to add color. That too was a challenge. Anyway you can see the progression thus far.

The crows disappeared for a couple of years, but they are definitely back now. There must be a family living nearby in the woods because they have been spending a lot of time in my yard these days. They have even been hanging out at the bird feeder. That's a new one. A few summers ago they would battle the squirrels for pears on our pear tree. I can remember seeing them hanging upside down trying to pull the pears from the tree. Quite a sight. I guess it was time for me to pay closer attention and create a piece of artwork with them as my focus.

My sister captured this wonderful Lab while he was propped up on a fence. He looks very much like one of my labs and I just had to do something with this photo. I may do another larger version of this which would include the fence rail on top. I think there's something interesting with the rail on top and bottom.

There was something about the simplicity of this guy that got my attention. When I was cutting the bird out of the background I thought I would use the texture that I would normally discard and create an abstract version (which you can see in the following post). Anyway I don't know that my abstract version was particularly successful, but I did learn some things. The image size of this collagraph measures 15" x 7".

Stilt on Circles (Stage 1 - Black and White)

When I was creating the plate for the more "realistic" version of the stilt I decided to try and do a more abstract version using the bird shape that I cut out of the background when creating the first "realistic" stilt. (If you look at the background of the next stilt that I post you will know what I am talking about). I recently acquired this circle texture and was anxious to try it out. Once I glued all my textures to the illustration board I inked up the plate with black ink, wiped it, placed a dampened piece of paper on top of the plate and ran it through the press.

In this stage I created another plate by gluing canvas to illustration board. I then transfered my design onto the canvas, mixed the colors, rubbed the ink into the canvas, placed the plate carefully on the dampened black and white version and ran it through the press. I probably should have left it alone at this stage, but I was curious what would happen if I added more circles to the background.

I decided I wanted to experiment and add more circles to the background. I created another plate by gluing the circle texture to illustration board. I then coated it with a thin layer of gloss medium. I mixed a mauve color, inked and wiped the plate (with tarlatan), placed it on the dampened print and ran it through the press. Unfortunately I did not achieve what I was looking for so I tried using black ink. That worked better, but I thought the circles were too dark. So I went to stage four.

I printed another round of yellow ink to subdue the background somewhat. In the process it killed some of the vibrancy of the color too. I may have to come back in with more color . . . not sure.

The lookdown is a game fish which is usually silvery on both sides. (I have obviously taken some liberty here in my color choices). In the western Atlantic, the lookdown is found from Canada and Maine south to Uruguay, which includes Bermuda and the Gulf of Mexico. They usually live in shallow water near the coast, along hard or sandy bottoms. Below is the black and white before I added color

When I was growing up my parents set their bird feeder up so that it was attached to the house and could be reached from the dining room window. I remember opening the window and sticking my hand out the window and sitting very still and having the chickadees come to feed. Recently I thought I would try to create a collagraph of one of these guys since I see them daily at my bird feeder. Initially I intended it to be black and white, but decided to carry it further. Somehow the black and white didn't quite work. I have included a photo of the black and white stage prior to adding color (below).

Kinglet #2 (Hand-Pulled Collagraph of Carolina Wren)

The wren is also known as "kinglet" in Old High German, a name associated with a legend of an election of the "king of birds". The bird who could fly to the highest altitude would be made king. The eagle out flew all other birds, but he was beaten by a small bird who had hidden in his plumage.

This crazy cat, that looks so serious, came with the house. I call him Vaska because my neighbor and dear friend Chester called him that. Vaska kind of mooched a little from quite a few neighbors, but he ended up living with us. Unfortunately several years ago he decided to stand his ground against a coyote and you can guess who won.

I mixed a little bit of burnt sienna with the black ink to give the print a warmer feel.

This collagraph can be dropped into an 11" x 14" mat with an 8" x 10" window and framed in a standard 11" x 14" frame.
